Writer's Block: Book review [18 Nov 2009|04:57pm]

What (if any) books would you ban from a high school library? Are there certain subjects that you feel are inappropriate for teenagers regardless of literary merit?

Twilight. Sparkly vampire shit is inappropriate for everyone. :-P

I seem to like books... [22 Oct 2009|04:20pm]
[ mood | bored ]

For the sake of friends who have enquired what I want for my birthday (coming up 14th Nov), I have decided to construct a list here that I can link them to. For the sake of people attending my birthday celebration this year, this is what we call a non-optional social convention. For everyone else on my friends list, just an opportunity to see what I'm currently interested in and gain some insight into my chronically bad taste. On to the list!

Silver Octopus Necklace
Plush-kill Wall Series - Berrycorn
Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City
Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum
The Essential Bordertown by Terri Windling
The Uplift Novels by David Brin (except Infinity's Shore)
The Arthur Trilogy by Kevin Crossley-Holland (Except The Seeing Stone)
Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke
The Sunday Philosophy Club Series by Alexancer McCall Smith (Except The Careful Use of Compliments)
The Imaginosis Books by Brian Froud

Disclaimer: I have no beef with anyone GLBT, but reserve the right to make fun of sportspeople [13 Oct 2009|04:39pm]

So... de-friending. What's the deal with that? Someobody who I've been on-and-off encountering on the internet for about 10 years now has recently done a friends-cull and defriended me from both facebook and livejournal. I speculate that the reason the did that is because I made a crack about the appearance of that African athlete who was all over the news a while back, and they misinterpreted that as an attack on people with differing gender identities. Now, I don't profess to be the source of all that is good and tolerant in the world, and I accept that I am pretty ignorant about some issues, but I do try. I try to be open-minded and I try to educate myself about different people and how they do or feel about things, but I'm only human and sometimes I fail. What's the deal with de-friending people for being only human?

Side note: this person has this "before you friend me" checklist which excludes people who hold things sacred, and yet they clearly hold the male/female/other issue quite sacred. I like to find humour in things, so sue me. There's no malicious intent behind it and I try to be careful to be sure that it doesn't inadvertently convey a malicious message either.

I also like to play the devils advocate and debate the opposite side of the issue. That should never be taken to mean that I actually hold those values, I am merely trying to encourage people to think through their arguments, recognise the opposite side of the issue, and consider the evidence behind and the flaws inherent in both sides.

And this person was commenting on my livejournal a mere day ago, with no indication that they had a problem with me. Still, I wish them all the best and home they can find peace.

"Sexy" Costume Options [11 Oct 2009|09:22pm]
[ mood | indecisive ]
[ music | None. ]

Poll #1469380 Halloween Costume
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 12

Which option would be best for my Halloween costume?

I have until tomorrow to decide on a costume for my cousin's Halloween party, so vote well and vote fast.

Edit: After much deliberation, I ordered "Tea Party Princess" and "Batgirl" as well cuz hey, shipping costs are so steep that it's the only chance, as Mum and Dad were getting their costumes as well and they fronted up a good 70% of the shipping cost.

Although "The Flash" costume was pretty cool, I think it would become outdated quicker because my interest in it stems from the Big Bang Theory tv show... and also it's halterneck and halterneck bras make my neck hurt.

Quite melancholy. [02 Oct 2009|09:37pm]

My life feels a lot like this comic at the moment. Not in terms of the romantic undertones or anything, more just that it seems like people are really keen on being my friend and knowing me and seeing me all the time... and then they're not. No explanation, no reason apparent to me, just... not.

Writer's Block: Do you prefer a tent or a luxury hotel? [23 Sep 2009|01:16pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]
[ music | None. ]

Would you rather spend the weekend camping in the woods or at a luxury hotel? Why?

View 928 Answers

Camping in the woods if it's relatively local, but luxury hotel if we're talking overseas trip. You need those creature comforts to come "home" to if you're out having a good time in a foreign land, but there's no point to luxury hotels in your own state/country - shack up with friends at most, but camping down at Dwellingup is bangin'.

By the way, I'm going to be using that word a lot from now on.

So like... you know how I exhausted myself yesterday reorganising the non-fiction section? It was such a sty, hadn't been touched in months if not years and it took me all day.

Got the call from on-high today. We were moving the non-fiction section.

Finally, Sam! [05 Sep 2009|11:46pm]

Updating livejournal from my shiny-ly reformatted laptop, want to make a go of regular posting again. So where are we? I'm still living at the most awesome place on the planet, my parents' house complete with spa and internet and never the twain shall meet, because you might get electrocuted. I'm in my final semester of law school, and was thoroughly unsuccessful in securing an articled clerkship. Oh well, looks like it's college of law for me, soldier on.

Oh! I bought a siamese fighting fish. His name is Sheldon, he has a black body with those red pointy fins at the front and then a blue veiltail. He also has a red frill, which he likes to flare whenever he sees me because he doesn't like me even though I keep his water nice and warm and give him frozen bloodworms.

I have seen many good films recently and if I were to rate them it would be like so:

1. District 9
2. Harry Potter
3. Star Trek
4. Transformers
5. Inglourious Basterds
6. The Ugly Truth
7. The Hangover
8. G.I. Joe

I also rented The Boat That Rocked and watched it with my Mum because I saw it in the cinema and liked it. She liked it too. Soon it will be Fathers Day, in 15 minutes. Happy Fathers Day Dad!

Writer's Block: Bite Me [28 Jul 2009|09:21am]

From Dr. Polidori's Lord Ruthven to Stephenie Meyer's Edward Cullen, the annals of vampire lore are filled with attractive, charming bloodsuckers. Which one would you most want to be bitten by?

I am going to have to agree with AG on this one, Otto von Chriek all the way. Obviously before the dear darling iconographer took the black ribbon, because it would just be cruel to make him break his vow - although relatively easy, a few well-placed b-vords would be all it takes.

I'm giving this a shot. No, I don't know how legit it is, or how to ensure you actually get the money you accrue, but it seems no-lose. You get a $10 bonus for signing up, and then you earn a bit each time you read one of their ads (you get a pseudo-email inbox and you have to click through to the sponsor website and sit there for 30 seconds). I'm guessing you also get money for signing up other people, so hey - if you're unscrupulous and have a high readership (haha, I know I don't!) then it might be fun.

Anyway, here's the link:

My car is fixed now! How many mechanics do you know that take only one day to source parts, and replace a bonnet, radiator, bumper and headlight. Oh, and panel-beat various things, refill the coolant, and test-drive the thing. Charging only for parts, no less!

The answer's probably none, because my Dad's not a mechanic - he's a fitter. Still, one day! Absolutely smashing, thank you Daddy.

Conflicted. [11 May 2009|03:16pm]

I'm slightly annoyed that the driver I hit has contacted her insurance company. I know doing it through them makes it easier for her, and I guess I can understand that, but I thought we had agreed she would get some quotes for repairs and I could pay directly. Now, on top of the repairs, I'll likely have to pay her insurance excess.

It's annoying, because she seemed sympathetic. And she agreed that she would get quotes before deciding to involve insurance companies. And oh yeah, because now my insurance premiums will be higher.

The sadness has spread to my wallet. [08 May 2009|10:05am]
[ mood | depressed ]
[ music | None. ]

Just when I save up a tidy sum of money, I have a car crash and it all goes down the tube, along with my self-respect and my family's respect for me. I'm a fuck-up, and I hate it. Everything seems wrong these days.

I shouldn't care about losing money, I know. I know that the reason you save money is so that you can manage if things like this happen. But it just feels so shit because it's so hard to earn and save money as a full-time student and it feels so damn unfair.

I'm just so fucking stupid, how could I be so stupid? Why the fuck was I rushing to uni anyway? It's not like classes even interest me. So I was following someone too close so I could get through on an amber light, and I rear-ended them.

I should just be glad nobody is hurt.

There are many roads to LiveJournal—how did you first hear about LJ?

View 500 Answers

I joined livejournal completely of my own volition. Nobody invited me or anything like that, I just wanted to keep an online journal so up I joined.

I'd never have it any other way - although sometimes I put my literary foot in my mouth, livejournal has ultimately been a rewarding experience and I guess that is why I keep shelling out the US dollars to subscribe.
